Biology professor Laura Sipe discusses her research on metabolically starving cancer cells to help the immune system fight back, with a livestream option.
In this Talk, we will hear from Laura Sipe, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology and recent recipient of UMW's Outstanding Young Faculty Member award. Dr. Sipe will present "Starving Cancer Cells to Help the Immune System Fight Back."
Chemotherapy is designed to kill cancer cells, but not all forms of cell death have the same effect. Some types of cell death can alert and train the immune system to recognize cancer, creating a more lasting defense against the disease. Dr. Sipe's team of undergraduate researchers at UMW is investigating whether metabolically starving cancer cells can make them more likely to die in ways that activate an immune response, opening new possibilities for cancer treatment.
